Essential Apps for Backpacking China Solo: Don't Get Caught Out!
Heading off on a solo adventure through China is bloody exciting, but yeah, a bit nerve-wracking too 😅. Everything's super modern and convenient, but it's pretty locked down—especially the app ecosystem. After my trip, these are the must-have apps that saved my bacon, so you don't end up lost or stuck in the middle of nowhere.
PAYMENTS: ALIPAY + WECHAT
Cash is basically extinct in China. From restaurants and taxis to bubble tea spots and vending machines—it's all QR code scans.
Alipay: Dead easy to set up for travellers, links straight to your international Visa or Mastercard.
WeChat: Not just for messaging—it's for payments and scanning everything under the sun.
I reckon Alipay's the go for most, with a solid English interface. That first time scanning to pay in 3 seconds? Felt like a local straight away.
MAPS: BAIDU + AMAP
Google Maps is hit-and-miss in China. For subways, buses, or metro exits, you need Baidu Maps or Amap—no ifs or buts.
Baidu Maps looks overwhelming at first 'cause it's all in Chinese, but just paste in the Chinese address and you're golden. It kept me from getting lost in those massive metro systems.
Amap's a breeze—intuitive layout, clear subway directions with times and fares. Chuck in the Chinese address, and you're set for navigating big cities without a worry.
TRANSPORT: DIDI + 12306
Didi's China's answer to Grab. English version available, and it integrates with Alipay so no extra download needed.
My fave Didi perks:
- Upfront pricing before you book
- No chit-chat required—just show the driver your phone
For inter-city jaunts, high-speed trains are the way to go. 12306 is the official China Rail app. Bit tricky for newbies, but the wins are:
- Official prices, no middlemen
- Seat selection
- Pays via Alipay
TRANSLATION & COMMS: GOOGLE TRANSLATE + PLECO
Google search might be blocked, but Google Translate works with a VPN or offline packs.
Handy tricks I swear by:
- Camera translate for menus
- Type in English → show Chinese to staff
Pleco's like your pocket translator—quick word lookups for menus, signs, or directions. Converts English to Chinese on the spot for drivers or shopkeepers.
INTERNET: VPN + DATA SIM
First time I went, I was dreading it. But once you've got these apps loaded, it all flows like a dream. China's ultra-modern—you just need the right tools to dive right in.
